During this weeks seminar we selected a research paper in small groups
and discussed how the relation of the research data could be structured into a
graphical scheme. Our selected paper was “The Effectiveness of Short Message
Service for Communication With Concerns of Privacy Protection and Conflict
Avoidance”, a study about relations of SMS communication. SMS communication
facilitates more extended modes of communications, that differ in what people chose
to say through an SMS that they would not say in person. This relation is examined.
They hypothesized
that the attitude of SMS would be influenced by its perceived effectiveness for
communications, perceived ease of use, and subjective norm. They also hypothesized
conflict avoidance and privacy protection will enforce the impact of perceived
effectiveness of SMS for communication. 953 participants executed a
questionnaire survey, which was performed at three different occasions. Two
times performed in Hong Kong and one in time in Shanghai. We discussed the
benefits and limitations of performing data collection in different cities and
came to these conclusions. You can’t generalize the results if you use more
than one city, there may be cultural differences, trends and habits between
cities. It’s more exact to generalize for one specific area, since this was a
behavior research. My opinion on performing quantitative research would be to
either perform data collection in one area to be able to determine a specific
conclusion of that area. Or collect from many places within a closed region/forum
to be able to get a general conclusion. For example within a state or an
Internet forum. And when having a larger scale region, there will have to be a
data collection method that reaches within the whole region to get a fair
picture.
